Quiet Confidence: VW Beetle 1964
In this session, I photographed a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle that presents itself as more than a classic car – it is a statement of character and philosophy. The Beetle is widely regarded as one of the most iconic automobiles in motoring history, its design enduring across generations. On this particular car, however, that identity has evolved into something more personal: a contemporary interpretation of a classic heritage that remains entirely relevant today.
Between the quiet of the shoot, there is a voice from this Volkswagen's past - still very much alive.
The aesthetic direction brings together two distinct influences: Cal Look and Scandinavian Soul. Cal Look, rooted in California’s modification culture, prioritises visual simplicity, a low stance, and clean performance – free from unnecessary distraction. This is reflected in how the car is presented: proportional, minimal in ornamentation, and focused on the Beetle’s original design lines, rendered here with greater clarity and refinement.
Scandinavian Soul, on the other hand, introduces a quieter, more emotional quality. It comes through in how light is used, how space is allowed to breathe, and how small details are brought to the foreground. Together, the two styles create a compelling harmony – at once assertive and visually calm.
The shoot took place on 20 January 2026 at Classic Hans Room, a space whose atmosphere supported the narrative precisely. Clean surroundings, controlled lighting, and an understated ambiance all reinforced the “quiet confidence” at the heart of this series – a car that needs no grand gesture to leave a lasting impression.
