Batik Beyond Borders
We were commissioned by Sheema Harding to develop a promotional website showcasing her distinctive body of work – batik applied to the sari, a fusion born from two of Asia’s most richly storied textile traditions. Sheema is a career diplomat and humanitarian with a vision to bring together the traditional art of Indonesian batik and the cultural heritage of India, creating something entirely her own in the space where those two worlds meet.
Where cultures meet, art is born — a fusion of heritage, identity, and expression.
Her journey began in 2012 while serving with the United Nations in Indonesia, where she immersed herself in the art of batik across Java and Bali. From there, she developed a distinctive personal style – weaving Indian motifs into batik technique and applying the results to traditional Indian textiles. The outcome is an artistic expression that is genuinely cross-cultural: neither Indonesian nor Indian in isolation, but a considered dialogue between the two.
The website was developed to present this body of work with the clarity and warmth it deserves – a platform that tells Sheema’s story, celebrates the craft, and invites an international audience to discover a rare and meaningful artistic fusion.
